You rolled down the hill the silver hill the dew got you wet. the grass was full of tiny frogs staring through this imagined world. you got one as a pet yeah you got one as a pet yeah you got one as a pet. you held him to your face and he said, "God is love and happiness, and nothing but love and happiness." The sky was full of buffalo purple white a mighty herd. you grabbed your friend by the hand and you two ran to the magnolia tree. the shade was green yeah the shade was green. and when the rain came down its sound was you dropping those beads, that whole bowl full of beads. The sun was in your eyes when you saw a flower gold a buttercup. you bent down to pick it up with careful hands for your mom cause that's what you do for those you love.

Home 03:52
You kneel down and press the earth the field you plowed and turned to loam, and every time your fingers sink you see yourself underneath, your arms outstretched feeling home. In dreams you see you see you see people you never seen. In dreams you see you see you see people that you love. Then you row your boat down to the bay and its wide embrace, you go faster on the exhaled tide, where you meet the sea as it meets the bay and you love the ocean’s open lines. You walk at sun at sun at sun-set towards that hill you never crest. And there are voices behi-i-i-i-ind it. You pause a moment and then you crest.

As If To Say 01:44

when you came all my time i spent wondering in the woods and my face looked strange looked strange in the mirror my face looked strange to me open your blue eyes see a crow spinning out a blue sky the pupil was black before the first days of sin and how you came here's a mystery and i can't i cant decide to i keep you sacred or ask let me in i don't know you but i want to the snow gushed down like a wound in the sky a drift so thick i couldnt see right i saw birds i saw a city crumble i saw ten moons gathering there i saw many things and then i saw your pale pale face and long black hair

Once and again I am more amazed that the waves carry me like God’s hands. I come up for air the sun is brighter the water’s clear. Oh God it happened once in a dream why couldn’t it happen again, again, again. There’s a room full of unnamed friends, I stand in the dark and smile with them. My wife holds a rare flower in her hands. My eyes pass from the petals to her face. And her loveliness seems impossible to me. Oh God it happened once in a dream why couldn’t it happen again, again, again.

Blue Sails 03:11
It is cold I know. So we will go to a resort town in the mountains, closer to the sun. And there we’ll have fancy clothes to wear. They march the food out, out on parade, the platters danced right up to your plate. And we’ll be warm in the hot spring baths. Doesn’t that sound good? I’ve built a boat with blue sails, it is swift and it is hale. We’ll sail upstream to the mountains and to the dream. And we’ll be alone like we are now, in a heated suite, on a bed the size of this room. In the gold light of a thousand candles, we’ll make love with our bellies full. Doesn’t that sound good? Good?

God gave you a certain line, coiled electricity. The hand released it in your lifeless breath and when it swoops and sparks you dream. The ground is soaking wet with the gallons of our sweat. In the forest of the Arden, we haven’t stopped dancing yet. You’re still a child, you’re still a child. When you were small they tossed you on a sheet, when you die you’ll grow steady like a tree. You’re still a child, you’re still a child. The ground is soaking wet with the gallons of our sweat. In the forest of the Arden, we haven’t stopped dancing yet. God gave you a certain line, coiled electricity. The hand released it in your lifeless breath and when it swoops and sparks you dream.

about

Written in the strange winter made hopeful by beautiful births with an eye to the best future I could imagine and resigned to the uncertain but perennial grace which we all hold so so dear in baltimore 2010.

Nice things people have said about it:

"One thing did stand out, and that was Shaun David Gould. His album For those you love is a pretty stunning folk album…and its free. Sometimes the folk genre gets pretty bland after hearing the same thing over and over. Gould manages to shine above."
-Suggested Listening for the blog Pasta Primavera

"For the past few years when I've gone back and collected my favorite Baltimore albums, organizing them into a list, it's been inevitable that I come across a handful of releases that I overlooked. This year's big miss - Shaun David Gould's For Those You Love...Gould's voice is incredibly gentle, with careful and absurdly rich tones scattered throughout. The production on all of these tracks is also worth noting, as it comes across incredibly lush yet still harbors a very personal ethos. This record is perfect for the days when the cold wind is as brutal as can be, providing campfire warmth within your home."
